June Update – Creatonaut 1.0.0 release, launchpad revamp and more!

Happy Pride Month everybody!

This month brings a host of new updates and features, some of which we’ve been working on for a very long time and that the community has been waiting very patiently for.

Creatonaut 1.0.0 release

It’s been a long time coming but we’re finished. Creatonaut 1.0.0 is out and available to everyone to use. It marks a major stepping stone in the development of the platform and is one of the last major hurdles left before launch, now that volunteers can begin to work on their courses!

We’ve already gone over the plethora of changes in our previous post so please take a look there if you haven’t already!

You can download Creatonaut now at launchpad, which is currently also undergoing changes to bring it up to date! You can read about it more below.

Security Certificate

You may see Microsoft Defender or other notifications pop up when Creatonaut starts or when it tries to update. That’s because Creatonaut is a brand new program so understandably when security suites haven’t seen it before they’re more alert. Typically they’ll scan Creatonaut on first boot and give it a pass but more cautious or aggressive vendors might report it as a false positive (Malicious when it isn’t)

The way to solve this is to get a Code Signing Certificate (EVCS-Cert). An EVCS-Cert is a signature that you can purchase and ‘sign’ your app with which proves that a reputable external body like Microsoft, Verisign, Digicert etc has audited the app you’ve made and can vouch that it’s safe.

A service like that is understandably very expensive (hundreds of dollars recurring) and we can’t afford it right now. When we can however, we’ll splurge for it! If you’d like to help us do so, please subscribe to our patreon, it would be immensely appreciated!

Nautilus Inc. is a registered company in the UK and bound by UK law, and I assure you Creatonaut is safe, because if it wasn’t The Lingonaut Project would’ve already been seized. However, we do intend to get our hands on a certificate eventually.

Bugs

Creatonaut, while now out of beta, will always continue to be a work in progress and especially in these early days there will be bugs we’ve missed that you might come across. It’s vital that we find these early on so they don’t impact the work of translatonauts once they’ve really gotten into course creation!

Please let us know about any potential bugs in the #bug-reporting channel on Discord! Creatonaut 1.0 supports automatic updates so we’ll be able to get them squashed as fast as we learn about them.

Launchpad Revamp

You might have noticed the changes that Launchpad has been going under the last few weeks. It’s become a better hub than other to consolidate and coordinate course creation efforts!

Translatonauts can now upload their courses and share them with others on every language’s new independent launchpad page, as well as view and participate in their respective discord channels. There’s useful links to the subforum for that language and the wiki among others too.

Finally, as the teams will be finalised over the next few weeks, they’ll be added to the launchpad as well. We’ll be contacting translatonauts about mini-bios they may want to add to their team page.

Wiki

Lingonaut.app now has a wiki! The wiki will cover course creation, Creatonaut, and when it releases it’ll cover Lingonaut too with information about lessons, leagues, guides and technical assistance. The wiki is a work in progress and will be periodically updated and added to.

Example courses

We’re hard at work on the English-Czech course to serve as a guide and template for translatonauts to work towards and compare against, once it’s ready we’ll let you know! It’s the final hurdle to launch and we’re on the cusp of the next stage in our Journey to become a platform built from the ground up to teach and not to profit.

Duo-Developments

It’s unfortunate and disheartening to learn that DUOL has allegedly complied with the Anti-LGBTQ laws in Russia, despite what initially appeared as sincere support of the community in recent years. They have (allegedly) removed any and all references to LGBTQ persons and concepts which stands contrary to their mission to make language learning accessible to everyone. Our stance is that everyone has a choice, and we fervently disagree with the one DUOL has taken.

Lingonaut will always be a safe and inclusive place for everyone, no matter who you are or where you’re from, and we will never comply with demands to infringe upon our community’s human rights.

Epilogue

We can’t wait to show you what we have in store for June, and we intend to introduce you to new members of our Crew later in the month too.

See you then!
