Hey everyone!
When this project began almost a year ago now, we promised that we’d bring forums back for lingonaut. But before that, we have to go back to 2021
The Duolingo forums let people from the world over come together to share their experiences, ask questions, provide answers, and engage in conversations about the languages they were learning.
The forums provided a sense of community and support for us, making it easier to stay motivated, find helpful resources and learn more about our fellow learners.
It was therefore a massive loss when they were shut down (along with sentence discussions later than that) and with that a massive archive of knowledge was lost.
We and many of the language learning community felt there was great value in having a shared space for learning, where multiple discussions can take place in their own little spaces, away from the algorithms of Reddit or the blur of messages of Discord. We wanted to bring the forums back, and rebuild what was once lost, knowledgebase and all.
And with that, I am proud to announce that the Lingonaut Forums are now live!
Lingonaut Forums
You can access the forums from the main navbar at the top of the site, and either register with your email or register using X, formerly known as Twitter. Google sign-in is a work in progress at the moment. You can use this account to access not just the forums but other features throughout the site, like commenting on blog posts!
The same rules which apply to the discord and subreddit i.e. the community bylaws also apply to the forums and we encourage you to read up on them before you start posting.
To keep up the fight against bots and spam, you need to participate a little before you can make changes and customise your profile, but rest assured, customising your page to make it feel like home is part of what makes us a closely knit community and once you’ve posted about enough (don’t spam!) more features will unlock overtime.
Ratings
We haven’t tried to imitate the duolingo forums, and with that comes a bunch of new useful and fun features that increase quality of life when using the forum and ensure that quality contributions get the recognition they deserve. There’s a rating system in place where the more you contribute, and the more your contributions are recognised by others rating your posts the higher your rating goes up.
We can’t wait to see what sort of discussions and resources you post!
Security
All of your information, including passwords is handled using encrypted HTTPS and SSL. Secondly, it’ll be handled according to the much tougher EU GDPR and data protection laws, even if you’re from the US (as we’re a British startup) and according to our privacy policy. Long story short, your information is safe, we or any potential attacker can’t see your passwords (but it’s still good practice to use a different one for every website!) and your information is protected and processed according to EU and UK law.
Other updates
A bunch of other updates to the website, including backend updates, a new login page and system, new additions to the navbar and some more have been made to facilitate the forum. We’ve also made it easier to access the launchpad and fixed some errors.
Creatonaut 1.0.0 is being actively worked on and will be a massive overhaul that’ll allow course creation to really begin, but quality work takes time, and you’ll need to be patient a little longer. We’ll let you know when there’s an update.
Thanks for reading!
